Council of Europe Secretary General Terry Davis condemns executions in Belarus

Strasbourg, 06.02.2008 - "I am saddened by the stubborn determination of the Belarus authorities to isolate their country from the rest of Europe. With the three executions carried out yesterday, they continue to flaunt their blatant disregard for the human values and achievements common to all other European countries.

Belarus is not a member of the Council of Europe, which has banned the death penalty on the basis of Protocol 6 to the European Convention on Human Rights, but Belarus is a member of the United Nations. The executions of Sergei Morozov, Valery Gorbaty and Igor Danchenko go against the letter and the spirit of the recent Resolution of the UN General Assembly, which called for a worldwide moratorium on executions."
