Thomas Hammarberg nieuwe commissaris voor mensenrechten Raad van Europa (en)

Strasbourg, 03.04.2006 - Thomas Hammarberg has succeeded Alvaro Gil-Robles as the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights following his election by the Parliamentary Assembly on 5 October last year (see our press release No 510a05).

At the official hand-over ceremony in Strasbourg today, Ambassador Gheorghe Magheru, Chairman of the Minister’s Deputies, and Secretary General Terry Davis welcomed Commissioner Hammarberg and paid tribute to his predecessor Alvaro Gil-Robles. The new Commissioner will address the Parliamentary Assembly during its spring session next week.

The change of mandates is also marked by the launching of the Commissioner's new web-site (http://www.coe.int/t/commissioner/default_en.asp) where Thomas Hammarberg presents his plans for the six-year mandate. It will include the first of his regular "Viewpoints", this time dedicated to "fighting terrorism with legal means".
