New ECA Member takes up duties: Ildikó Gáll-Pelcz (Hungary)

Ildikó Gáll-Pelcz will today take up her duties as the Hungarian Member of the European Court of Auditors (ECA).

On 16 May 2017, following her nomination by the government of Hungary and after consultation with the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union appointed Ms Gáll-Pelcz as an ECA Member for the period from 1 September 2017 to 31 August 2023. She succeeds the outgoing Hungarian ECA Member, Szabolcs Fazakas, whose term of office ended on 31 August 2017.

Ms Gáll-Pelcz is a chartered accountant and holds university degrees in economics and engineering. She was a Member of the Hungarian National Assembly from 2006 to 2010 and also served as its Deputy Speaker. She became an MEP in 2010 and was elected Vice-President of the European Parliament in July 2014 and again in January 2017.

The ECA’s Members will meet shortly to assign Ms Gáll-Pelcz to one of the five audit chambers and determine her specific duties. An updated organisation chart, along with her CV and declaration of interests, will then be published on the ECA website eca.europa.eu.

The ECA operates as a collegiate body of 28 Members, one from each Member State. They are required by the Treaty to perform their duties entirely independently and in the general interest of the EU. Their terms of office are renewable.

New ECA Members must be sworn in before the European Court of Justice after their appointment. Ms Gáll-Pelcz’s swearing-in is scheduled for 14 September 2017. A high-resolution photo is available on the ECA website’s audiovisual library and may be re-used provided the source is acknowledged.
