Wednesday 21 December (TBC): Security Union: Commission presents proposals to strengthen the fight against terrorist financing

The news:

On 21 December, the Commission will present proposals to complete and reinforce the EU's legal framework in the areas of money laundering, illicit cash flows and the freezing and confiscation of assets.

The Third progress report on the progress made towards building an effective and genuine Security Union will also be presented, with a focus on measures to fight terrorism and organised crime, in particular terrorist financing.

The background:

Security is at the forefront of the Juncker Commission's work. The proposals are part of its plan to establish an efficient and sustainable Security Union. Building on the European Agenda on Security adopted in April 2015, which underlined the need for measures to address terrorist financing in a more effective and comprehensive manner, in February 2016 the European Commission set out an Action Plan against terrorist financing to ensure that Member States have the necessary tools at their disposal to address new threats.

The event:

A press conference presenting the proposals will be held in the press room in the European Commission's Berlaymont building on 21 December following the College readout. A live stream will be available on EBS.
