Statement by EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides on the killing of five humanitarian workers in Afghanistan

It was with great shock that I learned about the murder of five staff working for the international humanitarian NGO Save the Children in Afghanistan. This appalling act calls for the strongest condemnation. My thoughts go to the families and colleagues of the victims.

Afghanistan remains among the most dangerous places in the world for humanitarians. I strongly call to all parties to ensure that humanitarian organisations have unhindered and safe access to the people in need who are suffering the consequences of years of conflict.

Humanitarian workers in Afghanistan and elsewhere provide lifesaving assistance to the most vulnerable people caught up in this crisis. Sadly, by doing so aid workers too often put their own lives and safety in danger trying to save others. Violence against aid workers is a grave violation of International Humanitarian Law.
