Statement by Commissioner Štefan Füle following his visit to the Zaatari refugee Camp after inaugurating a new school and signing agreement with UNICEF on financing educational projects for Syrian children

''It is a pleasure to be part of this signing ceremony. The signature for the financing of this important project is a significant step in providing education to the children of Syrian refugees in Zaatari camp. But there are many more, tens of thousands Syrians had to abandon their country. However that does not mean they are abandoned by us. We have particular responsibility vis-a-vis the young generation, making sure is not a lost generation but a generation that is going to build a new future.

I'd like to say big thank you to our international partners UNHCR, UNICEF, UNESCO for their efforts. I'd like to thank the Jordanian government for receiving the Syrian refugees with open arms, providing shelter and basic conditions for people fleeing the horrors in Syria.

We came here to talk not only about the past but also about the future. I underlined at my meetings with the King and the Prime Minister how the EU and its member states can strengthen the support in particular to the host communities and their population that welcomes the refugees. All this is an expression of our solidarity stressing the message that in addressing the impact of Syrian crisis you are not alone - you have us, international community at your side.''
