and Chinese State Councillor Ma Kai discuss cooperation on disaster risk management
Today, European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, Kristalina Georgieva, met with Chinese State Councillor Ma Kai, to discuss the cooperation in disaster risk management between China and the European Union. A joint project in this area was signed during the meeting.
"We followed up on the commitment to strengthen cooperation in the field of emergency management, made in 2009 by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso. Enhanced cooperation will provide a platform for knowledge exchange and will ensure more efficient and cost-effective response and preparedness for disasters," Commissioner Georgieva stated.
The Commissioner and the State Councillor also witnessed the signing of the agreement for an important project, aimed at strengthening China's disaster management system with the support of the European Commission and Member States. A cornerstone of the project is the exchange of experience and best practices in disaster management and risk reduction, which will foster sustainable cooperation between the EU, its Member States and China in this area.
