The EU-Albania Parliamentary Committee envisaged under the Stabilisation and Association Agreement held its constituent meeting in Brussels on 3 and 4 May. During the meeting, MEPs and their Albanian counterparts discussed the political crisis in the country following the elections of June 2009, the liberalisation of visas and other matters.

The EP delegation is chaired by Eduard Kukan (EPP, SK).  The other Members are Victor Bostinaru (S&D, RO), Raffaele Baldassarre (EPP, IT), Lajos Bokros (ECR, HU), Simon Busuttil (EPP, MT), Marije Cornelissen (Greens/EFA, NL), Arnaud Danjean (EPP, FR), Tanja Fajon (S&D, SL), Kinga Göncz (S&D, HU), Stanimir Ilchev (ALDE, BG), Doris Pack (EPP, DE), Gianni Pittella (S&D, IT), Marietje Schaake (ALDE, NL) and Sergio Paolo Francesco Silvestris (EPP, IT).

The committee, composed of 13 MEPs and 13 Albanian MPs, is part of the "political dialogue" dimension of the Stabilisation and Association Agreement signed in 2006, which entered into force on 1 April 2009.  Albania lodged its application for EU membership on 28 April 2009.

The EP Foreign Affairs Committee is expected to adopt a resolution in June on Albania's integration process into the EU.  This will be drafted by Nikolaos Chountis (GUE/NGL, EL).
