PRESS RELEASE No 06/2010

20 January 2010

EESC Members provide personal support to earthquake victims in Haiti

At its January plenary session , the European Economic and Social Committe e , on the initiative of President Mario Sepi , put forward and unanimously adopted a voluntary declaration in which all of its Members committed themselves to providing personal financial contribution to the victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

With these individual commitments, members of the EESC concretely responded to the statement by President Mario Sepi who had recently called upon all institutions and all European civil society organisations to demonstrate active solidarity: "I appeal to the consciences of our civil societies to ensure that a collective commitment at various levels is expressed practically through the provision of funds and the use of all available resources for projects to support and assist Haitian civil society".

For this purpose, every EESC member will donate a fixed proportion of the allowances that are usually granted in order to cover their travel to and accommodation costs in Brussels. The final destination of the donation will be decided upon in common by three EESC members representing the three groups together with President Mario SEPI in order to make sure that the correct civil society organisations in Haiti will receive them.

Civil servants of the EESC back the fund-raising effort and have been collecting money for days already.
