EESC debates the Social Economy 's role in time of crisis

As part of its efforts to contribute constructively, with conferences, ideas and proposals , to the recovery of the European economy, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) will hold a seminar on 22 October next on how to create the right environment for the Social Economy as a way out of the crisis .

Venue: EESC, rue Belliard 99, Room JDE 62, 6th Floor

Time : Thursday, 22 October 2009, from 11.00 a.m. to 5.45 p.m.

The conference will discuss and share experiences on how Social Economy enterprises (cooperatives, mutual organisations, associations and foundations) are facing the challenges of the crisis; it will also seek to identify, together with the speakers and participants, concrete examples of good practice at operational, political and regulatory level, including those with a long-term perspective.

Speakers will include EESC Vice- President Irini Pari, Sylvia Vlaeminck, DG Enterprise, European Commission, Krzysztof Pater, President of the EESC Section for Economic and Monetary Union and Economic and Social Cohesion (ECO), Matteo Bonifacio, Adviser, Bureau of European Policy Advisers of the European Commission (BEPA) and Gil Ramos Masjuan, Deputy Director-General for the Social Economy, the Self-employed and Corporate Social Responsibility, Spanish Ministry for Employment and Immigration.

The seminar will focus on the following issues: cross-border integration of social economy enterprises in response to the crisis, the necessary framework at Member State and EU level to enable Social Economy enterprises to operate on a level playing field, and the role of the financial Social Economy, mainly banking and insurance, in helping the Social Economy sector to overcome the crisis.
