EESC organiseert op 17 maart conferentie over bestrijding economische crisis (en)

PRESS RELEASE No 28/2009

10 March 2009

Everything to play for! Let's climb out of the crisis together, and opt for progress! : A timely EESC Conference to assess economic recovery plans on the eve of the European Spring Council

The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) will host a high-level conference on 17 March 2009 in Brussels, which will assess the implementation and initial results of the national economic recovery plans in the European Union. EESC President Mario Sepi will open the conference, which will present the views of European economic and social councils and feature European Commission President José Manuel Barroso and Commissioners Joaquín Almunia (Economic and Monetary Affairs) and Vladimír Špidla (Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities).

In the wake of ever-gloomier predictions for the Union's economic prospects in 2009, the EESC will seek to provide a practical overview of the efforts made by Member States to promote economic recovery at national level and find a way out of the crisis.

This Conference follows on from a successful conference entitled "Rien ne va plus? Ways to rebuild the European Social Market Economy" held in January, where the EESC began to explore the best solutions for rebuilding the European social market economy. The Committee now aims to focus more on the real economy and to take stock, together with the National Economic and Social Councils (ESCs), of the implementation at national level of the European economic recovery plan presented by the European Commission last November. The ESCs' input will be essential for assessing the economic and social impact of the crisis in the various Member States.

Furthermore, the presence of Mr José Manuel Barroso, the European Commission President, Mr Joaquín Almunia, Commissioner responsible for Economic and Monetary Affairs, and Mr Vladimír Špidla, Commissioner responsible for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities, will add greater weight to our discussions.
