The European Commission has condemned in the strongest possible terms this weekend's attack on African Union peacekeepers in Sudan's Darfur region. Commenting on the tragic killings, Michel said: "I would like to express my deepest sympathy to the families and colleagues of the soldiers killed in this outrageous attack on the African Union's peacekeeping base in Sudan's Darfur region. I was greatly saddened to learn of these tragic deaths of African Union soldiers who were committed to bringing peace and stability to this troubled region."

Commissioner Michel also extended his sympathy to the African Union and underlined the support and solidarity of the European Commission to the AU at this difficult time.

In addition, Commissioner Michel offered his support for the United Nations' call for all parties to recommit to a peaceful resolution to the conflict and to prepare for peace talks in Libya in October.
