Halfjaarlijks overleg drugsbestrijding in teken van EU Drugs Actieplan 2005-2008 (en)

Each Member State organises a meeting of drugs coordinators during its EU Presidency. Austria, too, wanted to uphold this tradition. Furthermore, there is also explicit provision for holding these meetings every six months in the EU Drugs Action Plan (2005-2008) adopted in June last year. Together with the EU Drugs Strategy 2005-2012, this plan constitutes the basis for the work to combat drugs at EU level,. The EU Drugs Action Plan sets out the measures to be taken and the objectives in the areas of demand and supply reduction, coordination and international cooperation. The main objective of the Drugs Action Plan is to achieve a substantial reduction in drugs consumption and to reduce the social and health impacts of illegal drug use and hence also of the trade in drugs.

All of Europe's citizens are affected by the drugs problem, which concerns not only repression, i.e. police and judicial measures, but also prevention, health, school and work, and social development. Coodination is a key element in tackling this problem and needs to be promoted as far as possible. Efficient cooperation is indispensable in order to achieve the objectives set out in the Drugs Action Plan and to combat the drugs problem.
