Meerderheid Duitsers vindt dat 'Brussel' te veel bepaalt (en)

The vast majority of Germans feel that they are dominated by Brussels, a new poll has shown.

Conducted by German news magazine Stern, the poll shows that 83 percent of Germans feel that too many decisions in Brussels are taken over their heads; 12 percent did not agree while 5 percent were unsure.

This poll comes shortly after another carried out by Germany's most widely read newspaper - the tabloid Bild Zeitung - which showed that if Germans had been asked their opinion on the EU constitution in a referendum, over 96 percent would have turned it down.

German parliament ratified the constitution by an overwhelming majority at the end of May.

However, the double rejection by France and the Netherlands last week of the constitution has sparked a domino effect is several other member states, now showing a significant drop in support for the document.

A poll by Polish paper Gazeta Wyborcza showed that support among Poles for the constitution lies at around 40 percent.

This compares to 60 percent who said they would vote for the document before the French and Dutch referendums last week.

Support in Denmark and the Czech Republic, other countries that may have a referendum on the constitution, has also dropped.

EU leaders are to meet next week to decide the next steps for the EU.
