A re-run of the recent election in Romania now looks unlikely as the country's Electoral Commission has voted against the idea by 21 votes to five.
The opposition had claimed that the elections last Sunday were tainted by fraud and called for a repeat of the vote.
Final results for the Parliamentary elections showed the incumbent Social Democrat party gained 36.6 percent of the vote, with the opposition Justice and Truth Alliance behind with 31.3 percent.
And Prime Minister Adrian Nastase leads the Alliance leader Traian Basescu by seven points in a Presidential election.
Neither man gained enough votes to win a majority, prompting a second-round run-off on 12 December.
Liberal leader in the European Parliament, Graham Watson, called on the EU to send experts to examine irregularities in the voting.
Romania is expected to join the EU in 2007. Both parties are in favour of accession.
