Portugal voorziet referendum Europese Grondwet in 2005 (en)

The Portuguese government will today (23 June) announce plans to hold a referendum on the European Constitution in 2005.

According to Publico the government will announce today that a proposal will be put to Lisbon Parliament in September, paving the way for a referendum next year.

The announcement comes as the Prime Minister and President of Portugal agree to hold a popular vote. Previously President Jorge Sampaio has been against holding a vote.

Both the government and the opposition are expected to back a yes vote.
