Europees akkoord over vrij verkeer van goederen tussen Grieks en Turks Cyprus (en)

More measures have been agreed to assist Northern Cyprus to end its economic isolation.

EU ambassadors meeting yesterday (28 April) in Brussels agreed to allow goods to travel from the Turkish north across the so-called "green line" into the Greek Cypriot south.

Goods will then be able to be distributed across the EU tariff free.

The deal will be a major boost to the North's economy and will create an almost level playing field for Northern and Southern Cypriot goods.

Until now only products such as oranges have been allowed to cross the green line that has become the EU's border after Greek Cypriots last week rejected a UN brokered reunification plan.

Justice and Home affairs ministers are set to approve the measures when they meet in Luxembourg today.

According to reports, the Commission and the Turkish chamber of commerce will be responsible for judging whether products actually have come from the north.
